Respecting boundaries with texting and phone calls to realtors and their clients
So there’s a recent discussion on Facebook about texting after hours in regards to real estate transaction.
There were comments that ranged from I don’t answer my phone after five all the way up to call me 24 hours and I’ll answer it unless I’m asleep.
The true reality of this business is it is not 9 to 5. And it is a client’s largest transaction they will probably ever do in their lifetime.
But let’s discuss both parties responsibilities and reasonings.
First off if this is a clients biggest transaction and you should be available to them 24 seven for any answers questions or concerns then the same would go for the buyer.
I find it interesting that because this is the largest transaction of somebody’s life or it is so important that I should be available 24 hours a day. Shouldn’t the same be for the client ?
I mean didn’t we all just clarify this was an extremely important transaction only something they will do once or twice in a lifetime. Yet many times my client state they cannot take off a day of work they can’t leave work early they can’t cancel business meeting.
What if we have a client that only wants to work after their work hours which could be in the middle of the night or well beyond business hours. Should I not take that client because I cannot appease their schedule. I get up at 5:30-6 o’clock in the morning. Would it be appropriate for me to send messages and phone calls to my clients who work nights ?
My solution to this problem of 24 hours seven days a week real estate is simple I turn off my phone ringer around 9 pm and have it come back on between 7:30 AM and 8 AM every morning. If I see a text come through and I’m able to answer it I will. In the beginning I asked my client what a reasonable hours and time frames to make phone calls or text messages to them ?
I think the whole problem be avoided with good communication on all parties and setting expectations and boundaries. It’s okay you can call me in the middle of the night and you can text me I just won’t hear it.
